SNAPBYSNAP

Life, captured in moments.

It all started with the birds

When I was about 10, I had a brownie camera and used it on a family vacation to Canada. On a ferry to St. Edwards Island, I think I took a picture of every seagull on or around the boat. My parents tried distract me, but I only had eyes for the fearless white birds. I followed a bird in flight and blindly snapped a picture. When the pictures were developed, I was amazed that I had captured a ring of fire (the sun) with the seagull in the center. Wish I still had that photo.

Many cameras later, we moved to the house we are in now, and Mark got me a bird feeder with a motion detecting camera. This little camera caught birds up close, but also caught their personalities, their fights, their pecking order and opened a window into their world that I wanted to be a part of. I got better at identifying birds, and was amazed to see the dozens of breeds visiting our backyard. It was truly spectacular. Eventually I upped my game with a better camera and a nice long lens. Once again, I was that kid tracking a seagull and was awed at the beauty I could capture.
